Etymology
فَوْضَى comes from the root ف و ض, which means to entrust or hand over authority. The classical phrase أمرهم فوضى بينهم described affairs or property held in common, with no one person in charge. From that idea of shared, undivided control the word came to mean a state with no authority: disorder and chaos. The same root gives تفويض, delegation, and فوضوية, anarchism.
