Etymology
The word derives from the triliteral root ṣ-ḥ-f, which carries the sense of a written page or sheet. From it comes ṣaḥīfa, a leaf or page, and later ṣaḥīfa in the sense of a newspaper. Ṣaḥāfa is the abstract noun for the craft and industry built around such pages: the press and journalism. The term became common in Arabic in the modern period as printed newspapers spread.
