Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ص-ف-ح (ṣ-f-ḥ), which carries the sense of being flat, broad, or a side. A صَفْحَة is the flat face of a leaf of paper. The same root gives words for a flat sheet of metal and for the act of turning one's face aside in pardon.
