Etymology

The word derives from the Semitic triliteral root ḍ-m-n, which carries the sense of holding or containing. The same root gives the verb ḍamina, to guarantee or to be liable. From the idea of something held inside came the noun ḍimn, the interior or what is included. It now works mostly as a quasi-preposition meaning within or among.
