Etymology

طَوْر derives from the Semitic root ط-و-ر, which carries the ideas of turning, rising, and passing from one condition to another. From this root Arabic builds verbs of developing and evolving, such as تَطَوَّرَ. The same root gives طُور, meaning mountain, as in طُور سِينَاء, Mount Sinai.
