Etymology
The word derives from the triliteral root م-س-ح (m-s-ḥ), whose core sense is to wipe or to stroke a surface with the hand. From wiping a surface came the idea of surveying and measuring land, the work of the massāḥ, the land surveyor. مِساحَة is the noun for the measured result: area or surface. The vowel pattern mifʿāla often marks an instrument or an abstract measure.
