The word comes from the Semitic root b-l-y, tied to the idea of wearing out and being tested. Form I بَلِيَ means to grow old or threadbare on its own. The Form IV pattern أَفْعَلَ makes it causative, so أَبْلَى means to wear something out, and by extension to put someone through a trial.
