Etymology
The verb comes from the common Semitic root ʿ-q-d, meaning to bind or knot. The physical sense of tying a knot extended to binding people by agreement, hence to conclude a contract or hold a formal gathering. The same root gives the Arabic word for contract and for creed, a belief one is bound to.
