Etymology
عَقْد comes from the Semitic root ʿ-q-d, which means to tie or bind. A contract is a binding, so the same word covers the physical knot and the legal bond. Hebrew keeps the related verb ʿāqad, to bind, in the account of the binding of Isaac.
