Etymology
لاحَظ is a Form III verb built on the triliteral root ل-ح-ظ (l-ḥ-ẓ), which carries the idea of a glance or a sidelong look. The related noun لَحْظ means a glance, and by extension a moment, the span of a single look. The Form III pattern fāʿala turns this sense into directing one's gaze at something, hence to watch, observe, and notice. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
