Etymology
قِطار comes from the root q-ṭ-r, which carries the idea of things following one another in a line. Its older sense was a train of camels roped together head to tail. When railways reached the Arab world in the nineteenth century, the linked carriages took the same name. The root's drip sense, drops falling one after another, belongs to the same image of items in single file.
