Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ر-د-د (r-d-d), a geminate root whose second and third consonants are identical. Its core sense is to turn or send back, and from there to repel, return, and reply. Classical Arabic extended it to rejecting, refuting, and restoring.
