Etymology

Arabic borrowed funduq from Greek pandokeion, an inn, literally a place that receives all comers. The word reached Arabic through Aramaic in late antiquity. From Arabic al-funduq it passed into the Romance languages of the western Mediterranean. It first named a roadside inn or merchants' lodging, the medieval institution behind the European fondaco.
