Etymology
أَلَدّ is the elative (superlative) form of the Arabic root l-d-d, which carries the sense of fierce quarreling and stubborn dispute. The base verb لَدَّ means to contend bitterly or to beat an opponent in argument, and the noun لَدَد means severe enmity. The word is best known from the Quran (2:204), where the hypocrite is called أَلَدّ الخِصام, the fiercest of opponents. Its plural لُدّ appears in Quran 19:97.
