Etymology
The adjective comes from the triliteral root خ-ط-ر (kh-ṭ-r), which also gives the noun خَطَر, danger or risk. The root carries the idea of something at stake or swinging in the balance, and of a thought that crosses the mind. خَطِير follows the faʿīl adjective pattern, which marks a fixed quality: full of danger, hence grave or serious. It is a native Arabic formation with no Indo-European source.
