Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral root ḥ-ṭ-ṭ, which means to put down, lower, or unload. The verb ḥaṭṭa describes setting something down or a bird alighting. Maḥaṭṭa is the noun of place on the mafʿala pattern, so it names the spot where things are set down or where a journey halts. The railway sense took hold in the modern period and now extends to power plants, broadcast stations, and space stations.
