Etymology
مانَع comes from the triliteral root م-ن-ع, which means to prevent or withhold. It is the Form III verb on the pattern فاعَل, which adds a sense of directed action against something. So the base idea of holding back becomes setting oneself against: to object or resist. The common phrase لا أُمانِع, 'I have no objection,' keeps this core sense.
