Etymology

دَوْم names the doum palm, Hyphaene thebaica, a tree of the Nile valley and the Sahel. Classical Arabic dictionaries record دَوْم as a desert tree bearing hard, round fruit. The word is a collective noun, and a single tree or fruit is دَوْمة. Its older history is uncertain, and any link to the root د و م meaning 'to last' is not established.
