تَعَرَّض comes from the triliteral root ع-ر-ض, which carries the ideas of width, presenting, and showing. The basic verb عَرَضَ means to present or display something. تَعَرَّض is the Form V (تَفَعَّل) reflexive: to put oneself in the way of something, and so to be exposed to it or undergo it. In modern usage it most often reports that someone suffered an accident, an attack, or criticism.
