Etymology
The root ع-ن-و is a native triliteral Semitic root meaning to submit, to be humbled, or to be subdued. It appears in the Quran, for instance in Ta-Ha 20:111, describing faces humbled before God. Because it is a final-weak root, the و surfaces as alif in the past tense, giving the form عَنا. Arabic is a Semitic language, so no Indo-European root applies here.
