Etymology

Mahbub comes from the Arabic root h-b-b, which carries the sense of loving or being fond of. It is the passive participle of the verb habba, built on the mafʿul pattern that Arabic uses to mark someone or something on the receiving end of an action. So mahbub literally names the one who is loved. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestry.
