Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral root ʿ-ṭ-l, which carries the sense of being idle, unused, or out of work. A عُطْلَة is therefore a stretch of time when work stops and a person is left free. The same root gives the Arabic words for unemployment, for a machine that breaks down, and for suspending an activity.
