Etymology

بَدْء is the verbal noun of the verb بَدَأَ, 'to begin.' It comes from the Semitic triliteral root b-d-ʾ, which carries the sense of starting or originating. The same root gives مَبْدَأ, 'principle,' and بِدَاية, 'beginning.' Arabic is a Semitic language, so the word has no Indo-European root.
