From the triliteral root ف-ي-د (f-y-d), which carries the idea of being useful or profitable. فائِدَة is the feminine active participle of the verb فادَ, 'to be of use,' so it names a thing that brings benefit. The financial sense, interest on money, grew out of the general meaning of gain.
