Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root ف-ء-ر. Classical Arabic dictionaries also record a related verb sense meaning to dig or bore a hole, likely describing the animal's habit of burrowing. Arabic belongs to the Semitic language family, not the Indo-European one, so it has no established Indo-European cognates. The feminine form فأرة later came to mean a musk pod, a naming choice that echoes, without being related to, how Sanskrit muṣka (little mouse) gave rise to the English word musk.
