The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ف-ش-ل (f-sh-l), tied to weakness, slackness, and loss of resolve. It appears in the Quran in the warning against quarreling "lest you fail and your strength depart." The older sense of losing courage shades into the modern sense of not succeeding.
