Etymology
Arabic borrowed قانون from the Greek κανών (kanṓn), meaning a rule, standard, or measuring rod. The Greek word itself goes back to kánna, a reed used as a straight measuring stick, a term of Semitic origin. The same Greek source gives English the word canon. Arabic later treated قانون as native and derived the verb قَنَّنَ, to codify, from it.
