زَواج is the verbal noun of the root z-w-j, which means to pair or to couple. It is built on the faʿāl pattern that turns a root into an action noun, so the literal sense is a joining into pairs. The related noun زَوْج, spouse or pair, is widely held to be an early loan from Greek ζεῦγος, yoke or pair, which reached Arabic through Aramaic. The verbal noun زَواج was then formed inside Arabic from that root.
