Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root d-w-r, which means to turn, revolve, or go around. As a verbal noun it first denoted a turning or a cycle, then a single turn in a sequence, a round, and a floor of a building reached by circling stairs. The sense of role grew from the idea of each actor or person taking a turn. The same root gives Arabic دار, a house, and دائرة, a circle.
