Etymology
رَغْم comes from the Semitic root ر-غ-م, tied to the image of a nose pressed into dust. The verb رَغِمَ first described that humiliation, and رَغْم became the noun for compulsion or being forced. From the idiom رَغْمَ أنفِه, literally 'in spite of his nose,' the word came to mean acting against one's will, and then simply 'despite.'
