Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral root ق-ض-ي, which carries the sense of judging, decreeing, and settling. A qaḍiyya is literally a thing that has been judged or set for decision, hence a court case or a matter to be resolved. The same root gives qāḍī, the judge, and qaḍāʾ, the judiciary and also fate. Over time the noun widened from the courtroom to mean any issue, cause, or, in logic, a proposition.
