آبِد comes from the Arabic root ء-ب-د, which carries the idea of permanence and remaining forever; the related noun أَبَد means 'eternity.' The verb أَبَدَ extended this sense to animals that stay out in the wild and refuse to be tamed. آبِد is its active participle, so it names the creature that abides in the wild.
