Etymology
أَبَد comes from the Semitic root ʾ-b-d, which carries the sense of lasting, remaining, and staying fixed. The same root gives the verb أَبَدَ, used of animals that run wild and never return to people. From the idea of something that endures without stopping came the noun for endless time. Classical and Quranic Arabic use it for duration that has no end.
