Etymology

قَدِيم comes from the Semitic root q-d-m, which carries the idea of going before or coming first. From the sense of that which precedes, the meaning shifts to that which is of old, hence ancient. The same root gives Arabic قَدَّمَ, to present or put forward, and قَدَم, the foot that steps ahead. Hebrew and Aramaic share the root in words for before and for ancient times.
