Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ḥ-m-l, whose core sense is bearing or taking up a load. From this root Arabic builds a broad family of words for pregnancy, porters, loads and campaigns. The same three consonants appear in Hebrew, where the sense shifted toward sparing or showing pity.
