Etymology
فِيلْم is a modern loanword. Arabic took it from European languages, chiefly English and French 'film,' in the early twentieth century as cinema reached the region. The English source goes back to Old English 'filmen,' a thin skin or membrane, a sense that suited the thin photographic strip. Arabic kept the foreign sound and fitted the word with a regular broken plural, أَفْلام.
