Etymology

غَرِيب comes from the triliteral root غ-ر-ب, which carries the sense of going away, distance, and the west where the sun sets. From the idea of someone who has traveled far from home came the meaning of a stranger or foreigner. The same root gives the words for west (غَرْب) and sunset (غُرُوب).
