Etymology
Arab grammarians traced ʿīd to the root ʿ-w-d, 'to return,' because the feast comes back each year. Many modern linguists instead treat it as an early loan from Aramaic and Syriac ʿēḏā, 'festival.' The original Arabic shape would have been ʿiwd, with the w shifting to y after the i. The plural keeps that y as aʿyād, where the bare root would otherwise yield aʿwād, 'sticks of wood.'
