Etymology

مُمْكِن is the active participle of the Form IV verb أَمْكَنَ, 'to make possible.' Both come from the triliteral root م-ك-ن, which carries the sense of being firm or established. The same root gives مَكان, 'place,' a thing fixed in position. Scholars link this family to the wider Semitic root for being firm, seen in Hebrew and Akkadian.
