Etymology

أَقْدَمَ is the Form IV verb of the Semitic root q-d-m, which carries the sense of the front, of being before, and of preceding. The Form IV pattern (أَفْعَلَ) turns the root into an act of moving forward, so the verb means to step out into something and to venture or undertake it. The same root gives قَدَم 'foot,' قَدِيم 'ancient,' and تَقَدَّمَ 'to advance.'
