Etymology

Safar comes from the Semitic root s-f-r, which links departing with uncovering. Classical Arabic verse praises asfar, the plural, as a source of gain for the seeker. The same root yields safir, ambassador, and sufra, food packed for the road. English borrowed safari through Swahili, which had taken safar from Arabic.
