مُحادَثَة is the verbal noun of the form III verb حادَثَ, 'to talk with someone.' It is built from the Semitic root ح-د-ث, whose core senses are 'to happen' and 'to tell or narrate.' The مُفاعَلَة pattern adds the idea of doing something back and forth, so the word names the mutual act of talking. The same root gives حَديث, 'talk' or 'a saying.'
