Etymology

دِراسَة is the verbal noun of the root د-ر-س, which means to study or to learn by going over something again and again. The older sense of the root was to thresh grain or to wear a surface smooth, the idea of treading the same ground repeatedly. Arabic extended this to repeated reading and learning. The same root gives مَدرَسَة, a school.
