Etymology
كُبْرِي entered Egyptian Arabic from Ottoman Turkish köprü, meaning bridge, during the long period of Ottoman administration in Egypt. It has no real connection to the Arabic root ك-ب-ر (kabīr, 'great'), despite its surface resemblance to kubrā ('the greatest'). It became the everyday word for a bridge or flyover in Egypt, while formal Modern Standard Arabic tends to use جسر (jisr) instead. Speakers from other Arabic-speaking regions may not recognize the word at all.
