Etymology
The word derives from the Arabic triliteral root ج-ن-ن (j-n-n), which carries the core sense of covering or concealing. From it comes جُنُون (junūn), meaning madness, thought of as a hiding of the mind. The same root gives جِنّ (jinn), the hidden spirits, and جَنّة (janna), a garden hidden by its foliage. The adjective adds the nisba suffix -iyy to form an adjective meaning of or relating to madness.
