Etymology
The word derives from the Semitic root b-q-y, which carries the sense of remaining or staying. It is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb أَبْقَى, meaning to cause to remain, and so it names the act of keeping or retaining. The Form IV pattern إِفْعال adds a causative sense to the plain root idea of staying.
