Etymology
مَزْح comes from the triliteral Semitic root م-ز-ح (m-z-ḥ), whose core sense is joking or jesting. مَزْح itself is the masdar, the verbal noun, of the basic verb مَزَحَ, meaning to joke. Because Arabic belongs to the Semitic family rather than the Indo-European family, it has no Proto-Indo-European root or Indo-European cognates.
