Etymology

The word comes from معدن (maʿdin, "mineral, metal, ore, mine"), built on the triliteral root ع-د-ن, which carries the sense "to dwell, settle, remain fixed." A maʿdin was originally "a place where something resides," applied to the spot underground where metal is found. The nisba suffix -iyy turns that noun into the adjective معدنيّ, "of or belonging to a mine," hence "mineral" or "metallic." The same root gives Arabic عدن (ʿAdn), the name behind the biblical Eden.
