Etymology

زَيْت comes from the Semitic root ز-ي-ت, a root shared across the Semitic language family and tied originally to the olive. Arabic زَيْتُون (olive, olive tree) uses the same root, which points to olive oil as the base meaning before the word widened to cover oil in general. This is a Semitic root, not an Indo-European one, so it has no connection to English oil, which traces back through Latin and Greek instead.
