Etymology
لَهاة comes from a defective Arabic root, written by classical lexicographers as ل-ه-و or ل-ه-ي, whose final weak consonant surfaces as the long ا in this noun. This is a purely grammatical grouping: the same root spelling also produces لَهْو, meaning play or amusement, but the two words are not semantically related. There is no established Indo-European root behind لَهاة, since Arabic and its Semitic root system are unrelated to Indo-European.
